Day Off !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“a rule had been
violated and punishment followed. It was that simple.”
Below are just a few photos of our
Bermuda Shorts holiday.
Please
send us any other photos you may have and we will add them to this page.
TOM
STEWART PROVIDED THE FOLLOWING EXCERPTS FROM LETTERS SENT TO HIS PARENTS IN
1961
I
have recently been going through old boxes of family memorabilia. It turns out
my mother was a packrat. She saved absolutely everything, including every
letter I ever sent home. Two letters I
wrote in May of 1961 contained descriptions of our infamous Day Off.
We
really had a scream yesterday. The entire senior class took a day off. We
originally planned to meet at the common in Bermuda shorts and march to school.
We did. When we reached school, Howie told us to go home and change and come
back but instead we went to a girl’s house and had an all day party. 303
seniors were absent. We collected money for the Jimmy Fund at the party and got
$47. Patti Hersey and I are going to have our pictures in the Bulletin with it.
The day off made the WBZ news and the front page of the Traveler. When we came
back today we had a senior assembly where Howie gave us all (303) double
detentions and 5 demerits. Everyone is serving their time gladly. It was a
scream and we’d all do it over again. The whole town was on our side. . .
Well,
all the seniors still have three double detentions to go. So far during the
detention periods I’ve been cleaning up the center court so it hasn’t been too
bad for me. The night before the march in Bermudas
several of us came up to the school and hung up a dummy, three flags, and threw
78 rolls of toilet paper in six different colors all over the trees in the
center court. It was really beautiful but the office didn’t quite see it that
way . . .
