WALTER J. BELL JR.

 

SUDBURY, MA – Walter J. “Wally” Bell Jr., 59, of Sudbury, died Wednesday, February 20, 2002, at his home. He was the husband of Sandy (McDonald) Bell for 29 years.

 

Born in Natick, he was the son of the late Walter J. and Helen (Killeen) Bell.

 

Raised and educated in Natick, he graduated from Natick High School in 1961.  He furthered his studies at the University of New Hampshire and graduated in 1969.  After he was married they moved to Sudbury.  He was a teacher at the Josiah Haynes Elementary School in Sudbury.  He taught second, third and most recently fourth grade until October 2001.

 

An avid athlete, he coached for Sudbury Youth Soccer, Youth Basketball and C.Y.O. Basketball.  He was a member of the Sudbury Education Association where he served on numerous committees.  He was a driving force in the establishment of the Vermont Odyssey Program of the fourth-graders.  Annually he helped coordinate the basketball bonanza and he was major fund raiser for the SEA Scholarship Fund.  In his free time, Walter enjoyed playing soccer, basketball and softball in the Sudbury Men’s League as well as traveling in the U.S. and abroad.

 

Besides his wife, he leaves his son, Trevor R. Bell and his daughter, Gretchen H. Bell, both of Sudbury; his sisters, Sandy Bell Venezia of Hudson and Lauren Desmond of Henniker, NH; his brothers-and sisters-in-law, Edward Desmond of New Hampshire, and C. Brian and Maryann McDonald of Springfield; and his mother-in-law, Elsie McDonald of Rhinebeck, NY.

 

He was the brother of the late Brenda Bell Golden and brother-in-law of the late Charles W. McDonald.

 

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 23, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Church,

160 Concord Road, Sudbury.

 

Visiting hours will be Friday, February 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Duckett Funeral Home of J.S. Waterman & Sons in Sudbury.
