IT’S OFFICIAL – THE NATICK RED
HAWKS
Red Hawks
Replaces Red and Blue, Redmen as Natick High Mascot
Vote may have been influenced by a red hawk flying
through a school window last year.
The
inspiration for Natick High’s new mascot fell out of the sky — literally. In a
school wide vote Tuesday, students and teachers chose “Red Hawks” from six
potential names, including Natick’s current nickname, the Red and Blue.
Students and staff said the new mascot honors Natick’s history, particularly
the Native American mythology surrounding the raptor.
The new name also pays tribute to an
actual red-tailed hawk that crashed through a hallway window at the school in
December 2010. The bird immediately recovered and flew away on its own. “I’m
not sure if you can get a bigger sign than that,” said senior Brad Swartz, who
said the bird’s resiliency could be seen as symbolic. “Not
only to fly through a window, but then be able to fly away.”
Of the
750 voters who cast ballots, 53 percent chose Red Hawks, followed by 22 percent
for the Knights and 18 percent for the Tribe. Two other new choices, the Legacy
and the Pride, were in the single digits. All five nicknames were chosen by a
name change committee last month. The Red and Blue, Natick High’s team name
since 2008, got only 2 percent of the vote. In a separate vote, eighth-graders
at Kennedy Middle School supported the switch to Red Hawks as well.
The Red and Blue, the controversial
replacement for the school’s old Redmen nickname,
never sat well with students who wanted something more tangible to represent
their school. “I think the biggest issue that came out of the last name change
debacle was we didn’t have a mascot to root for,” said freshman Riley Mistrot.
There also was a small contingent of
students who wanted to go back to the Redmen, or at
least a close facsimile, freshman Aaron Sachs said. “I certainly noticed quite
a bit of support for the Tribe, because they wanted to bring the Redmen logo back,” he said. Others at the school were wary
of reopening the wounds of 2008, however. “It could have brought back that
controversy,” Swartz said, who mentioned some students were worried the Tribe
might have been too close to the old nickname. “What I think the (name change)
committee was interested in was bringing unity to the town, rather than a name
that would split it again,” Principal Rose Bertucci
said.
Students said Red Hawks is a more
respectful nod to Natick’s Native American history than Redmen.
It was also close to the suggestion of Chief Caring Hands of the Praying Indians,
who in a recent email to Bertucci favored Red-Tailed
Hawks.
The Red and Blue theme won’t be totally
abandoned, according to Bertucci, who said the
current “N” logo will still grace official letterheads and other stationary at
the high school. The color scheme will also be worked into the new Red Hawks
mascot design. Fassino Design, a graphic design
company owned by Natick High grad Diane Fassino, has
volunteered to create the new logo, Bertucci said.
The school will vote on five possible versions of it in three to four weeks.
Bertucci
hopes to have the new mascot on equipment and apparel by September when the new
school opens.

NATICK RED HAWKS??
Natick High to Replace 'Red and Blue' Name
When
the Natick High School team name was changed to Natick Red and Blue in 2009, the change ignited controversy. Many in the
town wanted to keep the traditional Natick
Redmen name. Since then, some students, staff and
other members of the community have been seeking to drop the Red and Blue for yet another name—a wish
that may soon come to pass. NHS principal Rose Bertucci
announced in February that she would accept suggestions for a new team name to
coincide with the opening of the new high school in September.
Bertucci
said at the time that the name will not return to the Redmen. "I recognize the name Redmen holds a significant place in the history of NHS. It will not,
however, be among the options considered," she said. "I appreciate
that for some people the previous name represented a longstanding team loyalty
and pride for their school. I also understand that even if you love a name for
perfectly good reasons, when it does become a meaning that offends a portion of
society then there is the need for change. I look forward to making the most of
this process, and bringing current students, alumni, and the entire town
together under a new name."
Students, staff, and community were
asked to submit name suggestions by March 30. Following the deadline, the
Natick High School Name Change Committee narrowed the submissions to five options
that could replace the current Red and
Blue team name. The five names were:
Natick Pride
Natick Legacy
Natick Knights
Natick Red Hawks
Natick Tribe
On May 1, students and
staff voted for their favorite among the five. NHS principal Rose Bertucci is expected to reveal the school community's
choice for a new team name by Friday May 4.
In a poll conducted Wednesday by the Natick Patch on-line newspaper, readers
preferred

Within the next few weeks,
a graphic artist will design five logo options. Students and staff will then
vote again to decide which logo will accompany the new team name.

HAPPY TRAILS IN NATICK
On Mondays and Wednesdays from 10
a.m.-noon, the Natick Trails Maintenance Committee (aka Natick Trail Buddies) gathers to help clean up the town's trails
and parks. They remove trash, hack away at invasive
species ... in short, they make the trail system a lot more enjoyable for
everyone. The trails could use more signs, and they could use more Buddies not
only to help clean up, but to help educate other residents that throwing trash
around is not such a great idea. For information on how to join, contact Pat
Conaway at 508-740-9949 or bpconaway@gmail.com.

50th REUNION BUDGET
RECONCILIATION
When we began to plan for our 50th
reunion celebration, we had two budget goals, including:
1.
Before we started, the class of 1961
bank account contained just over $2000 – which provided welcome working capital
for the expenses involved in organizing the 50th events. We wanted
to make sure that future reunion organizing committees would have similar
resources available. So, our first goal was to construct a budget plan that
would, in the end, return most, if not all, of the $2000 to the class account.
Doing so would provide start-up funds for our next reunion and funds with which
to maintain the class website and sustain periodic land mail communication with
those in the class who are without email access (about 70 folks are in this
category).
2.
We were determined to set reunion ticket
prices that were affordable for most, if not all, in the class. We wanted to
make sure that no class member would be excluded from 50th reunion
events due to an inability to afford tickets.
We
think those two goals were met.

that captures perfectly the essence of Christmas.
GRANDMA AND SANTA CLAUS
I remember my first
Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid.
I remember tearing across
town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb:
"There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know
that!"
My Grandma was not the
gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she
would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I
knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one
of her "world-famous" cinnamon buns. I knew they were
world-famous, because Grandma said so. It had to be true
.
Grandma was home, and the
buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was
ready for me. "No Santa Claus?" she
snorted...."Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been
going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain
mad!! Now, put on your coat, and let's go." "Go? Go where,
Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second world-famous
cinnamon bun.
"Where" turned
out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town
that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked
through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a
bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll
wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.
I was only eight years
old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for
anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people
scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood
there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who
on earth to buy it for.
I thought of everybody I
knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church.
I was just about thought
out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad
breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two
class. Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went
out to recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling
the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't
have a cough; he didn't have a good coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with
growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!
I settled on a red
corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would
like that. "Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind
the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. "Yes,
ma'am," I replied shyly. "It's for Bobby." The nice lady smiled
at me, as I told her about how Bobby really needed a good winter coat. I
didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag, smiled again, and wished
me a Merry Christmas.
That evening, Grandma
helped me wrap the coat (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked
it in her Bible) in Christmas paper and ribbons and wrote, "To Bobby, From
Santa Claus" on it. Grandma said that Santa always insisted on
secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we
went that I was now and forever officially, one of Santa's helpers.
Grandma parked down the
street from Bobby's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the
bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa
Claus," she whispered, "get going." I took a deep breath, dashed
for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his door and
flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma. Together we waited
breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it
did, and there stood Bobby.
Fifty years haven't dimmed
the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby
Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about
Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were -- ridiculous.
Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.
I still have the Bible,
with the coat tag tucked inside: $19.95.
May you always have LOVE
to share,
HEALTH to spare and
FRIENDS that care...
And may you always believe
in the magic of Santa Claus!

MYSTERY SOLVED!!
The
story behind the Class of 1961 mystery banner has been revealed. Our own Ralph
Sims had the banner constructed for our 50th reunion weekend. He
first attempted to hang it from his mother’s apartment window in the former Coolidge
Jr. High School – a sentimental choice that ran afoul of the heartless
bureaucrats who rule that housing complex. No banners allowed.
Ralph
next tried to affix the banner to the gazebo on Natick common. A great second choice but . . . more rules and regulations.
No signs or banners allowed on the gazebo. And so, Ralph sought out a home for
his banner that promised no complaints from anyone – a fence surrounding an
abandoned factory on Route 27. Who knows? The banner may have inadvertently
arrived at the only location in Natick that might guarantee it will still be
hanging in 2016 when we gather for our 55th reunion.
Thank
you Ralph!!

Check

MYSTERY BANNER
The
banner pictured above was spotted recently (by Merrie Swanson) hanging on the
fence of an old factory site (Natick Paper Board Company which was torn down
about six months ago) on Route 27 in Natick. How did the banner get there? Who
put it up? How long has it been there? Nobody seems to know. Do you? If so,
please send us the details. Sorry, no prize.
CLASS WEBSITE CLEARED BY MCAFEE!!!
We received the following email from McAfee earlier
this week:
From: McAfee SiteAdvisor Support
To: Thomas Patrick Stewart – Natick High School
Class of 1961
Sent: Wednesday,
September 21, 2011 9:33:55 AM
Subject: “MCAFEE HAS
INCORRECTLY LABELED OUR HIGH SCHOOL CLASS WEBSITE AS DANGEROUS"
Hello Tom,
Thank you for taking the time to inquire about the SiteAdvisor
web safety analysis of your website.
SiteAdvisor senior engineers have cleared this domain
for a green Web safety rating switch.
If you still find a red rating for your site, kindly get back to us with the
screen shot.
I will be happy to assist you in resolving it.
Sincerely,
Vengadavan Avert Services
McAfee SiteAdvisor
Yet another victory for the Class of 1961!!!!!
IF YOU SHOULD MOVE OR LEAVE THE
PLANET
OK.
This is a bit of a delicate request, but an important one.
The
class website will serve as an ongoing source of information about our
classmates and will provide a means for planning and communication for future
reunions. And, it will serve as a memorial site for the classmates we have
already lost and those we will, sadly, lose in the future. As such, it will be
important to keep the Class List
updated continuously.
We
ask that when/if you relocate, PLEASE provide us with your new land mail
address and telephone number. And, if you change your email address, PLEASE
provide us with the new email address.
And
(this is the delicate part) PLEASE ask your family to notify the class if you
should die. We need no other reminder of the fragility and unpredictability of
life than the 51 classmates we have already lost. We do realize that
considering one’s mortality can be unsettling, and we dearly hope to see all of
you in 2016. Stay well – and in touch.

days to go until our 55th reunion celebration!!
THE CLASS WEBSITE LIVES ON!!
The
Class of 1961 website will continue. What began as a means to publicize our 50th
reunion celebration has morphed into much more than that. The website will stay
up indefinitely. It will serve as a communications hub for the class, as a
means to document the lives and (sadly) the passing of class members as the
years go by, and as a resource for future reunion planning.
WEBSITE “START” PAGE REVISED
The
class website start page (the page that first appears when you visit the
website) has been revised. To ensure that you can access all the new features,
we suggest that you “refresh” your browser when you next visit the start page.
Beginning
this week, a new page – Reunion
Retrospective – has been added to the website.
This
page will serve as a collection site for feedback, reflections, kudos,
complaints, likes, and dislikes regarding our 50th reunion. Comments
from several classmates have already been received. To read them all, click on
the Reunion Retrospective
link at the top of this page, or just click HERE.
You can submit your own reunion comments by email to Natick1961@gmail.com
or by land mail to PO Box 252, Marstons Mills, MA 02648.

50TH REUNION CLASS PHOTOGRAPH
Professional
photographer John Sahagian somehow managed to tame a wild
and wooly class of 1961 for just long enough to take a photograph of all the
classmates who attended the Saturday evening gala at Sandy Burr Country Club.
If
you didn’t submit an order at the gala and would like a copy of the photograph
($10), you can place your order by contacting John Sahagian
via email to Jack41835@aol.com

of these pictures will be posted on the class website. Watch for them starting
next week and continuing for several weeks to come.

seconds – until our 50th reunion celebration!!!!!!!

everyone coming by clicking on the

New
pictures of Bill Coan, Joanne David Corrigan, Nancy Bross Roles, and Janice Freeman Crooker arrived this past
week but IRENE – that wicked witch from down south – has interfered with their
processing for the website. Our photo expert (that would be Jan) is still
without power. Look for the photos on Classmates
Then and Now next week.
Likewise
for an absolutely terrific picture of several Class of 1961 ladies in Mrs. Turney’s junior high school sewing class (1956) – courtesy
of Janice Freeman Crooker. It too won’t show up on Memory Lane until Jan’s power comes back on.
A

Jeff
Salvin’s obituary has been added to his In Memoriam page – and new information has
been added to Joe Garvey’s page.
New Natick High School Photos
Allan
Ross (NHS ’59) has assembled a photo documentary of the fall of our old high
school and the rise of the new high school along side.
Check
out Allan’s photos at http://home.comcast.net/~
Bad Irene
In
the hurricane department, we were VERY pleased that Irene decided to visit
Massachusetts this past weekend and NOT next weekend (though it would have been
far better had she not arrived at all). “Very wet and very windy” is not the
forecast we have in mind for reunion weekend.
All
of our psychic energy is focused on producing sunny and mild weather on
September 9, 10, 11.
Bad McAfee
Despite
our many requests (including a detailed description of the benign nature of the
NHS Class of 1961 website), the McAfee internet security company has yet to
remove the Dangerous Site designation
it mistakenly affixed to our class website about a week ago (Warning: Dangerous Site. It may be designed
to trick you into submitting your financial or personal information to online
scammers.).
If
you do have McAfee security software and have encountered this problem, please
let us know. We are continuing to document the problem for McAfee (though they
seem deaf to our communications) and want to be able to cite all of the problems
it has created for our classmates. Thank you.
Calling All Lawyers
If
you are an attorney and have a bit of time on your hands, and would like to
assist our effort to convince McAfee that our website should be exonerated,
please contact us.
South Natick Tour
Bill
Coan has arranged a walking tour of South Natick on
Saturday of reunion weekend.
Tour
stops will include the Eliot School (now a Montessori School), the Beacon Free
Library and Museum, Charles River Park, and perhaps the skating rink and playing
fields by the Shaw Gym, followed by a visit to the coffee shop located in
Coopers/Ebers Pharmacy. Those wishing to join the
tour should meet at noon at the Eliot School. For more information, contact
Bill Coan at wcoan@nycap.rr.com.
Natick Days Parking
As
previously noted, the Natick Days
festival will take place on Saturday, September 10, in Natick Center from 11:00
AM to 4:00 PM. Parts of downtown Natick will be closed to traffic during the
day. For those coming to the In Memoriam
Gathering at Morse Institute Library, given our start time of 10:30 AM,
parking should be available in the large lot located immediately behind the
Natick Police/Fire Station. The library informs us that there are no parking
restrictions in that lot on Saturday, so the entire lot will be available, even
on the “Sticker Only” side.
For
others planning to visit the downtown Natick area on Saturday, you may want to
consider using the Free Shuttle Bus that will operate between the high
school and downtown Natick from 11:00AM-4:00PM. Parking is free at the high
school.
For
more information on Natick Days, go

IN
THE “WHOOPS” DEPARTMENT

DRESS CODE
We’ve
had a few inquiries about proper attire for the Friday and Saturday reunion
events. So, after an exhaustive inventory of our closets, we’ve come up with
the following guidelines.
For the Friday welcome-to-the-reunion party at the Hampton Inn:
Wear
whatever you find comfortable – it’s a CASUAL event. That’s C-A-S-U-A-L
For the Saturday evening Gala at Sandy Burr Country Club:
Wear
whatever you find comfortable – at this point in our lives we’ve all earned that right.

information has been posted to the Class
List. Dave surprised us recently with news that he will make the trip from
California to join us at the reunion in September. He also sent “then and now”
photos which are posted on Classmates

Bob
Anderson writes with news of a special project:
I have the honor of being one of the veterans that was selected
to read and record a block of names for the Moving Wall. It is currently set up
in Natick, MA. It is a very moving experience to walk along the 58,000 names
engraved in the Wall. It is 1/2 size replica of the Wall in Washington, DC. The
Wall tours the country, setting up in each location for a few days and moving
on to the next location. It requires the efforts of a lot of people and approx
25 grand to have the wall come to your location. It is staffed by local
volunteers and open to viewing around the clock. The
local committee has been working for well over a year to make it happen. See it
if it comes your way. For more information on the Moving Wall: http://www.movingwallnatick.

We
were pleased to receive this week a last minute donation to the 50th Reunion Fund-Raising
Campaign. Check out the LATEST total by clicking on the Fund-Raising link at the top of this
page. THANKS SO MUCH to ALL who made the fund-raising campaign a WHOPPING
success!!! We will be announcing reunion ticket prices soon, right after we
resolve an unforeseen but not unwelcome development (see immediately below).
In
the RECALCULATING department:
We
learned this past week that the planned venue for the Welcome-to-the-Reunion
party on Friday evening of reunion weekend has become a victim of the VAST
ENTHUSIASM of our class. The Natick VFW Hall was to have been the party site,
but . . . . it’s TOO SMALL!!! So
many of our classmates have indicated that they plan to attend the Friday party
that we have exceeded the VFW Hall’s allowed capacity. So, we’re now
visiting several other possible venues in Natick. Once a new site is selected
and the associated costs factored into our budget, we will announce the reunion
ticket prices. We expect to make a decision regarding the new Friday evening
venue by the end of next week. Stay tuned.
In
the QUALITY CONTROL department, we are a bit chagrined to report that the names
of eight of our classmates were inadvertently left off the Who’s Coming to the Reunion? list. That
mistake has now been rectified. Check out the EIGHT new names by clicking on
the Who’s Coming? link
at the top of this page.

everyone who has helped get us this far. In the two days left before

NINE
DAYS TO GO!!
The
50th Reunion Fund-Raising
Campaign had yet another good week. We’ve now gone past the $8500 mark and
$9000 is within our reach.
Fund-raising
will end in just nine more days – on May 15 – at which point reunion ticket
prices will be announced. The MORE we raise, the LOWER the ticket prices will
be. And the lower those prices, the more AFFORDABLE it will be for ALL our
classmates to attend the reunion.
If
you have already contributed, THANK YOU SO MUCH. If you have yet to give, and
have the means, please consider doing so by May 15.
Might
your contribution be the one that gets us to $9000?

SEARCHING
FOR A DOWNTOWN WALKER
We’re
looking for someone to lead a walking tour of downtown Natick on Saturday
(September 10) of Reunion Weekend. The walk will be a leisurely visit to the
old Coolidge Jr. High School, St. Patrick’s School, the new police/fire station,
the expanded town library, Casey’s Diner, Jones’ Drug Store, and other old and
new sites in the downtown area. The tour might meet up with a walkers’ group
(led by Joni Ford Dickens) that will arrive at the Common from the high school,
and might also morph into an ice cream party on the Common (at the Park Street
Ice Cream Shoppe).
Might
the walker we’re looking for be you?

THREE
WEEKS TO GO!!
The
50th reunion fund-raising campaign is nearing its endpoint. The
response of our class to date has been nothing short of AMAZING. We have gone
past $7500 and $8000 is within our reach.
Fund-raising
will end on May 15. One final push can get us to $8000 by that date. That
amount raised would guarantee LOW ticket prices for each of the three reunion
events and help ensure that ALL of our classmates will be able to attend the
reunion.
If
you have already given, thank you SO much. If you have yet to give, and have
the means, please consider doing so by May 15. Every dollar will help. And your
contribution just might be the one that gets us to $8000.

New
contact information for Tom Dugan and Beth Griffiss Bleakney

In
the mystery department, careful readers will note that Sylvia Curran Champa has been added to the Who’s Coming to the Reunion? list. She
also currently occupies a spot on the Missing
Classmates page of this website. How can that be, you ask?
We
received one of our outreach return postcards this week from Sylvia who
indicated on it that she will be attending the reunion. The card, however,
contained no return address. And, we had not sent an outreach note directly to
Sylvia because, well, she’s “missing” and we have no address for her.
It
seems likely that Sylvia was given the postcard by someone else in the class
who clearly does know where Sylvia lives. HELP PLEASE!!

you to all who have responded thus far.
And
finally, this just in:
The
50th Reunion Fund-Raising
Campaign continues full speed ahead. The latest results are HEART WARMING
indeed.
We
are so thankful to all of you who have given so generously. Read all about it
by clicking on the fund-raising link above.
The
MORE we raise, the LOWER the reunion ticket prices will be, and the MORE of our
classmates will be able to attend the reunion.
We
want EVERYONE to be there!

More
new names have been added to the Who’s
Coming to the Reunion? page.
A
lovely photo spread of Beverly Wentworth Rohde (with best friend Beverly) has
been added to
Classmates Then and Now. Check out Beverly and her
little friend.
Several
Class of 1961 45th Reunion
photos (courtesy of Evelyn Grady Sommers) have been posted to Memory Lane.
Please,
please, please (courtesy of James Brown) respond to the Reunion Attendance Survey if you have not already done so.
We
need your response (which represents only your expectation at this point, not a
firm commitment)
to ensure that
reunion ticket prices are set absolutely as low as possible.
What
are we talking about, you say? Check → HERE to
find out.
And,
please, please, please send us a recent photograph of your smiling self for
posting to
the Classmates
Then and Now page of this website.
We
can work with an actual photo (which will be returned to you if requested) or a
jpg file.
Come
on now. We’re all in this 50-years-later boat together.
The
50th Reunion Fund-Raising
Campaign continues (we hope) to receive new donations. We just can’t tell
you what they are this week.
Our
treasurer, Edie Hopf Blodgett, is traveling and away
from her mail box for two weeks.
And
finally, BARBARA CURTIS SWEETING has gone missing.
At
one point, Barbara was officially “Found”
and her contact information was posted to the Class List (where it remains).
But
recently, a mailing we sent to Barbara was returned with the notation Not at this address; no forwarding
information available.
Several
calls to Barbara’s telephone number (which does still have voice mail attached)
have gone unreturned.
Please
help us find Barbara if you can. We don’t want to return her to the Missing Classmates page.
If
you have any information that might help us locate Barbara, please send it to Natick1961@gmail.com.
(And, do PLEASE remember to notify the Class of
1961 website when/if you too relocate.)

Several
more names have been added to the Who’s
Coming to the Reunion? page.
A
new photo of Craig Reubens has been added to Classmates Then and Now. Craig
describes, “Here I am a couple of weeks ago seated comfortably on my 78 inch
long Tour Easy recumbent bicycle, somewhere on the Big Trail that encircles San
Francisco Bay.” He adds, “Full disclosure: I carry a boom box attached to the
luggage rack of my bike and play mostly good old 1960s rock and roll music as I
roll merrily along. Sometimes the music triggers memories of good old Natick
High School.” Check out this retro traveler on Then and Now.
If
you haven’t yet done so, PLEASE do respond ASAP to the Reunion Attendance Survey that went out earlier this week.
If
you missed the survey email, check it out by clicking → HERE
Once
you’ve finished responding to the survey, kick back and take a time trip
straight back to the fifties. How? By visiting Memory Lane and clicking on the Back
to the Fifties link, courtesy of
Walter “Skip” DeMelle.
Our
fund-raising campaign continues to receive new donations.
Receipts
slowed this week but we’re still hopeful that our original goal will not only
be met but well surpassed. Check out the latest fund-raising results by
clicking on the 50th Reunion Fund-Raising
Campaign link at the top of this page.
Thanks
to all who have contributed so far!
And
finally, what would our high school reunion be without a Casey’s hotdog!!
The
folks at Casey’s Diner haven’t lost a step over the past 50 years. Check out
the Casey’s legend by clicking on the link below. http://www.hotdogstories.com/2010/07/casey-diner.html

Two
more names have been added to the Who’s
Coming to the Reunion? page.
Contact
information for Dick Phillips, Ted Bracken, and Laraine Stepner
has changed.
Their new addresses appear on the Class List.
Dick
Phillips, who was with us at NHS briefly (he moved from Natick following our
freshman year) and now lives in Australia
writes that he won’t be able to attend the
reunion but did send a “Now” picture, complete with kangaroo!
Check
it out on Classmates Then and Now.
Ken
Hibbert has made an early bid for the Who Traveled the Furthest to the Reunion?
prize.
He
writes, “I just bought tickets to fly in from my home in Europe to be with all
our classmates at the reunion.”
In
the Say It Ain’t
So Joe department, the MetroWest Daily News
reported this past week that Fairway
Bowling is about to close its doors.
The
paper reports, “The popular and longstanding candlepin bowling destination in
Natick is expected to close its doors sometime this May.”
An
employee at Fairway said the bowling
alley “just isn’t making it any more” and that Fairway would be purchased
by Dover Rug Company “to be turned into a
carpet showroom.”
In
the fund-raising department, the news is good – and will hopefully get even
better in the weeks ahead.
Our
initial goal was $4500. As it turns out, we may have been far too conservative.
Our classmates have proven to be generous indeed.
We’ve
been raising funds for just two weeks and have already gone past the $3000
mark.
It
seems possible that we could go well beyond our original goal. If we do, that
would take a SUPER SIZE bite
out of reunion ticket prices and allow
everyone to attend!
Whatever
amount we raise, ALL of it will be applied directly toward reducing reunion
ticket prices.
Thank
you so much to all who have contributed thus far.
