60 (61st) Reunion Update –
Survey Results
The results are in
from our informal survey of the class regarding whether to hold the reunion in
June or September of next year. Drum roll please . . . . We have a three-way
tie. Preferences were fairly evenly split among June, September, and either
month.
So, what to do?
We’ve decided to
let those classmates who plan and organize the reunion determine when it will
be held next year and what form it will take (single day vs two day event,
formal vs informal gathering, fancy vs casual venue, higher vs lower cost
ticket, etc.). In other words, if you (or a group of you) step forward to take
responsibility for planning and organizing the reunion, you get to make those
decisions.
The four of us will
provide back-up support for whomever does the organizing and planning. That
support will include communication with the class, funds (from the class bank
account) for organizational expenses, budget assistance, ticket pricing, and
guidance/consultation as needed.
So, give it some
thought, talk with your classmates, and then decide if you (or a group of you)
would like to plan and organize the reunion. If so, let us know as soon as
possible. If more than one person (or group of classmates) expresses interest
in planning/organizing the reunion, we will put you in touch with each other to
possibly form an even stronger team.
All for now. . . .

Covid safety
concerns lead to postponement of Natick Days and our 60th
class reunion.
Here’s the
text of an email sent to our classmates this past week regarding the reunion:
It’s time for a decision regarding
whether to hold our 60th reunion this coming fall or wait until next
year. Sadly, we are inclined to wait until the fall of 2022 to hold the event.
Here’s our thinking:
Yes, Covid cases are less now than six
months ago, but they are still occurring in significant #s; and there is
concern that a new wave of cases may materialize at some point this year; and
though many of our classmates will likely have been vaccinated by the fall,
some will not.
We will know a lot more by this time
next year. The risks seem too great to take by gathering this fall (especially
for folks our age) and it is likely that more than a few classmates who
normally attend reunions would choose to stay away from an event held this
fall.
For us, the primary downside of
delaying the reunion is that some classmates who might have attended may pass
on during the extra year before the reunion is held. We would rather accept
that risk than risk classmate deaths by proceeding ahead before the pandemic is
clearly under control.
All for now. We will check back in
with you six months from now to review how things look at that point. Until
then, please stay safe.

A Pilot’s
Tale
Our
classmate Bruce Fisher has published a book. Check out the details below.
I’m guessing
others in our class have also written and published books. Give a shout if you
have and we will be glad to feature your work on the website.
A Pilot’s Tale, A
Certain Adventure at Port Royal, Jamaica
Captain Bruce B. Fisher, in his first novel, weaves a
tale that begins with the earthquake that hit Port Royal, Jamaica on 7 June
1692. “A pocket watch found frozen in time recovered by a diver in 1969
indicated that the event occurred at precisely 11:43 a.m. A second quake
followed by a tsunami caused over 2,000 souls to perish and much of the
‘Wickedest City of all Places on Earth’ to disappear below the surface of the
sea.”
Twenty-eight years later–1720–Bartholomew “Black Bart”
Roberts, no doubt under some alias, fetched up in Port Royal in time to witness
the hanging of ‘Calico’ Jack Rackham out on Gallows Point. Born John Roberts in
1682 he was the most successful pirate of the ‘Golden Age of Piracy.’ Why was
he there? How long did he stay? Did he leave anything behind?
Miraculously, what is left of Port Royal remains today
on the far western end of a long sandy peninsula of palm trees and mangroves,
barely eking out an existence. Many of the simple folk remaining are in some
manner related to pirates, freebooters and privateers of yore who once gave
Port Royal such a sinful and wicked reputation.
Some 300 years after the earthquake–1997–Marine Pilot
and Master Ship Handler, Captain Bruce Fisher, received a message in a sealed
envelope, the note read: “Captain, please contact ASAP. We would like to send
you to Jamaica if you can be available.” The assignment was to bring 80,000-ton
Panamax bulk carriers into a long-abandoned site of the former Royal Navy
Coaling Station. There was no navigable channel, no charts, no dock, and water
of unknown depth.
Thus, began a modern-day adventure requiring masterful
skills of seamanship. Navigating through a narrow channel over a sunken city
with only inches to spare, little did Captain Fisher know that what lay beneath
held mysteries from the past and what untold intrigue and danger would come to
pass.
A Pilot’s Tale
is the first in a series based on the sea-going career experience of a proud
Mass Maritime Academy grad. Now a part-time marine pilot consultant, Captain
Fisher is moored in Newport, Rhode Island with his soulmate Claire. A Pilot’s Tale is currently available
on Amazon Books. For additional information contact Bruce Fisher by email at captbbf@mail.com
