CWO4 Ronald Everett Curtis, U. S. Coast Guard (retired), 69, of Standish, passed away Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 at his residence after a long illness with his wife and children by his side. He was born in Worcester, Mass. on Oct. 1, 1940.

 

He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who adored his family, which was his life. He was well respected by all that knew him. He had a never ending sense of humor. He was an avid sports fan and he especially enjoyed watching hockey.

Ronald retired as a Chief Warrant Officer from the U. S. Coast Guard after completing 22 years of service. His assignments included two tours of duty as a Marine Safety Officer, where he was a machinery and hull inspector. Senior inspector for such projects as Barges for C & H Sugar Co., a dredge for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers built at Bath Iron Works and numerous retrofitting of various vessels. His tour of duty as Naval Engineer with responsibilities for all ship board repairs for a fleet of 26 vessels, with yearly expenditures of one million dollars and assignment of 78 civilians.


After retiring from the U. S. Coast Guard Ronald was employed with Falcon I Sea Transport L. P. where he was an inspector for the construction of two 33,000 DWT tankers, built at Bath Iron Works. His primary duties were for the installation and testing of all machinery, electrical and piping systems. His secondary duties were on the fabrication of steel units up to 200 tons for fit up, welding and dimension control, pretesting and acceptance of major machinery prior from delivery and installation.


Ronald was a member of Masonic Lodges for over 40 years in New York and Maine. He was currently a member of Saccarappa Lodge of Mason # 86 in Westbrook.


Ronald is predeceased by his parents, John and Laura Irving and sister Jacqueline Cheney. Survivors include his wife, Caroline Curtis of Standish; son, Steven Curtis of Standish, two daughters Ronda and her husband Joseph Kenney, Sr. of Standish and Laura Curtis of Portland; two brothers Philip Irving and his wife, Marian of Massachusetts and James Irving and his wife, Evelyn of Colorado, two sisters Judith Morris and her husband, Raymond of Fla. and Nancy Irving of New Hampshire; six grandchildren, Michael, Shane and Rose McLaughlin, Deanne, Kirby Marie and Joseph Jr. Kenney; and several nieces and nephews; and a great-niece in Massachusetts.


Visiting hours will be held on Monday Sept. 13 from 6-8 p.m. at Dolby & Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State Street, Gorham. A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland. On-line condolences may be made by going to dolbyfuneralchapels.com
