PLAINFIELD - Irwin Fischer, 78, of Northwood Drive, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018, at his home, after a long, courageous battle with illness.

Born in Malden, Massachusetts, on July 1, 1940, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Freda (Shalek) Fischer.

Irwin attended schools in Malden, Massachusetts, and was a graduate of Natick High School, Class of 1959. He went on to continue his education at Boston University where he received his master's in elementary education. After his schooling, he was a teacher in Sherborn, Massachusetts, where he taught for over 40 years.

After his retirement, he moved to Barre where he resided for a short time before moving to Plainfield where he made his home. He enjoyed living in Vermont. His favorite pastime was taking long walks through the woods and taking pictures.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Cynthia Pierro Martin, of Plainfield; his children, William Fischer and his wife, Tess, of New York City, Sylvia Guthrie, of Fenton, Delaware, Robin Cahill, of Holliston, Massachusetts, and Susan Fischer, of Cambridge, Massachusetts; as well as four special grandchildren, Michael Guthrie, Amber Cahill, Kayla Guthrie and Ryan Cahill. He is also survived by one sister, Judith Goldstein and her husband, Joel, of York Beach, Maine, and two nephews, Benjamin Goldstein and Daniel Goldstein.

To honor his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.
