I have a memory of
Mr. Filledes’ biology class, when it was Dianna DeCosta’s turn to do her
science project presentation in front of the class from Mr. Filledes’ desk.
Mr. Filledes
traded places with each student while they were doing their presentation,
meaning he sat in their seat with the rest of the class while it was going on.
During the middle
of her presentation, and for some unknown reason, chatter developed in the
room, including Mr. Filledes. Dianna was understandably annoyed, and started to
tap her pencil on the desk to regain the class’ attention.
When that didn’t
work she yelled out with an authoritative “QUIET!!” The room fell to a stunned
silence, with students turning to Mr. Filledes, still sitting with us, like
what is going on, a student giving orders to a class, including a teacher?
Mr. Filledes, with
a big smile, and extending his arm toward Dianna, told the class that she was
in charge while doing the presentation. He also apologized to her for the
class, including his part in the chatter, and asked her to please continue.
Dianna was
certainly a determined hard worker.
