Biography
Mr. Owen P. Keenan Jr., 83,
of Milford died Sunday (April 27, 2008) at the SunBridge Care &
Rehabilitation Center for Milford, after a period of declining health. He was the
husband of Irene M. (McCarthy) Keenan.
He was born in Milford, the son of the late Owen P. and the late Mary
E.(Gallagher) Keenan and was a life-long Milford resident.
Mr. Keenan attended the former St. Mary's parochial schools and graduated from
the former St. Mary's High School in 1941. He enrolled in Holy Cross College in
Worcester upon high school graduation but left college in 1943 to serve his
country in the US Army until 1945. He then re-enrolled and graduated from Holy
Cross College in 1948. He later earned a Masters degree in Education from
Boston College.
He taught Latin, French, and Music in the Natick public school system for over
(30) years retiring in 1982. He also was employed as a sales clerk both
part-time and full-time at the former Jordan Marsh Company in Framingham for
(40) years.
Mr. Keenan was a WWII US Army veteran having participated in the Ardennes,
Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns and battles.
He was a life-long communicant of St. Mary's Church, a member of the Board of
Directors of the "Friends of the Old St. Mary's Cemetery", the
"Purple Knights" of Holy Cross College, the Holy Cross Clubs of
Worcester and Cape Cod, the Boston Steinway Society, the Cultural Center of
Bass River, the Airedale Club of Massachusetts, and a charter member of the
Worcester Chapter of the "Battle of the Bulge." He also had served as
a volunteer at the Milford Senior Center.
Besides his wife of (50) years, he leaves (3) sons, Owen P. Keenan III and his
wife, Bridget, of Burbank, CA, Paul G. Keenan and his wife, Elizabeth, of
Shrewsbury, MA, and John F. Keenan and his wife, Michelle, of Lincoln, RI; (1)
brother, Peter F. Keenan of Quincy, MA; (1) sister, Mary McKinnon of Naples,
FLA; (8) grandchildren, Jack, Matthew, Erin, Julia, Caroline, and Bridget
Keenan, and Molly and Hannah Hart; several nieces and nephews.
His funeral with Military Honors will be held on Thursday morning (May 1st) at
9:30AM from the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress Street, Milford MA
followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM in St. Mary of the Assumption
Church, 19 Winter Street, Milford MA. Burial will follow in the Old St. Mary's
Cemetery, Cedar Street (Rte.85.) Milford MA. Visiting hours will be held on
Wednesday (April 30th) from 5PM to 8PM, at the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home.
