Story #2
May 25, 2019
Dear Classmates,
I received a call two nights ago from Richard Quilty, Class of 1957. He is the husband of Jane from the
class of 1958. I only know her as Jane Quilty and because
she and I had done some reunion work together a few years ago, she was in my
telephone contact list. So, it wasn’t a surprise to see her name pop up, but
she sounded like a guy. It was, in fact, Richard.
He had an interesting story for me.
This past winter, he was visiting the cemetery and
noticed the coin I had left for Allen. It was stuck in the snow, probably
moments from disappearing forever. He had read the letter to Allen that I had
left with the coin so he knew it came from me. He brought the coin to the
cemetery supervisor, Dennis, who said he would keep it safe until there was a
final disposition given. Dennis mentioned that he could epoxy the coin to the
headstone. Richard told him that he would give me a call and ask if I thought
that was a good idea. Of course I thought it was a
good idea, it was a great idea. Richard said he would be talking to Dennis in
the morning, May 26, 2019. Many thanks to the entire Quilty
family for following through with getting this coin back where it belongs
Does anyone have any idea how difficult it has been for
me to write this story to you all? I think of Allen’s sacrifice, I think of Ken
Poole thinking enough about me to get me that coin, I think of Richard who
found the coin and Dennis who keep the coin safe until we could figure out what
to do with it. I am emotionally spent. I thank each and everyone of you for
being in my life.
